About Me

My name is Mrs. Markel, (I just got married and used to be a "Zimmerman.") I established Math Made Easy Tutoring in 1998 and have successfully tutored hundreds of students over those 25 years. I'm fortunate to have received ALL 5-star reviews from my many happy clients. In addition, I have gained broad teaching experience by homeschooling my five children for 10 years on every subject at every grade level.

I have a Bachelor's degree with a Secondary Mathematics Teaching Certificate and am currently getting my Master's in Education: Teaching and Curriculum. I have extensive experience supporting students with various skills and challenges. I've successfully taught thousands of hours virtually, but also offer in-person services in the greater Lancaster/Harrisburg/York/Lebanon Pennsylvania area.

I have substantial experience teaching students with a variety of needs including but not limited to: ADD, ADHD, ODD, Asperger's Syndrome, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Executive Functioning Disorder, Processing Disorder, voice box, Mensa and Gifted and Talented.

How is this different from major tutoring services like Mathnasium and Sylvan?

Unlike the large tutoring services I do not charge exorbitant fees for evaluative tests. All of my tutoring is tailored not only for the students learning needs, but also staying focused on what they are learning in class currently. I also do not follow a set curriculum of unneeded information that wastes students time and their families' valuable money. When seeking one-on-one instruction in a large facility there are many distractions. I eliminate the distractions and focus on the individual. I also offer learning that is measurable and custom-made.

How do I schedule and what are your policies?

I ask for a monthly agreement like most other activities and sports. A total of $100 ( a one time non-refundable $50 registration fee and $50 towards your students' first one hour appointment) is due to schedule with me and hold your spot on my calendar. We will then work together on a schedule for four or more one-hour sessions and the fee for the rest of the month will be due at your first appointment. I then ask for payment at your last paid appointment for the next month. (Please note: There is a $20 late fee for payments received 48 hours past their deadline.) As much as possible, I try to keep the same day and time appointments each week for each student. When scheduling, I understand plans change and there are vacations. I respectfully ask for a 48-hour cancellation/rescheduling. Unfortunately, please note that there are NO refunds for missed or changes to appointments within a 48 hour window. Thank you for respecting these business practices.

Do you assign homework?

Not unless requested by guardian. All learning occurs in session. Adding homework may cause frustration and overload. The primary focus is to complete already assigned homework during the tutoring session.

Do I stay with my student at tutoring?

I always want my families to feel comfortable. Unfortunately, I don't have a waiting room but if your student needs their parent to stay the first time to get acclimated and comfortable that is important and will be permitted.

What if my child is sick? Or the weather is inclement?

My highest priority is your student and their welfare and safety. In the rare instances that your student is sick, you will have grace and an excused absence the first time and it will count as a missed appointment thereafter. If the schools are closed due to inclement weather-- I am available by zoom to give an online session. I always want my families to stay safe.

Where do we meet?

We can meet either online or out of my home in Hummelstown. My students meet with me every hour so I do NOT travel. (In very rare cases I may be willing to travel. This is usually when there is a commitment of 4 or more hours a week or only daytime hours. However, if travel is needed, It will be evaluated on a case-by -case basis and could include additional fees and new policies for its unique situation.) Because I tutor students back to back, I am not a childcare and cannot watch students outside of their regulary scheduled time. There will be a $1/min. charge for drop offs and pick ups that exceed 5 min.

Do my tutoring sessions expire?

Because I have a busy schedule with many students, your student will have 3 months to use their paid sessions. After that they will expire.
